A three day International Film Festival titled Picturing Reconciliation will be screened at the Punchi Theatre (ICES)

A three day  Documentary Film Festival titled Picturing Reconciliation will be screened at the Punchi Theatre, Borella from January 24 – 26.  Fourteen award winning documentaries will be screened during the three day festival.  The programme has been organized by the International Centre for Ethnic Studies (ICES) and the Organization for Visual Progression (OVP).  The schedule is as follows:

 

Thursday, January 24

3:00 pm                         Defiant Art: Lareena Haq  (4 minutes)

In this interview, Lareen Haq, a University teacher of Tamil explains how language can be a motor for both peace and destruction.  Lareena is determined to play her part in making language a driving force for positive change in post-war Sri Lanka.

 

3:10 pm                      Iraq in Fragments (94 minutes)

American director James Longley spent more than two years filming in Iraq to create this stunningly photographed, poetically rendered documentary of the war-torn country as seen through the eyes of   Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds.

7:10 pm                      Kerosene (13 minutes)

Kerosene is a short video portrait of resilience, expression and survival, capturing the stories of Jaffna’s taxi drivers and mechanics.

 

Friday, January 25

3:00 pm                      Seeking Harmony (29 minutes)

  Seeking Harmony is a dialogue between IDP Muslim community and host community in Puttalam, which documents the experiences

of IDPs and the host community and their relationship.

 

3:30 pm                      Enemies of the People (94 minutes)

The Khmer Rouge ran what is regarded as one of the twentieth century’s most brutal regimes.  Yet the Killing Fields of Cambodia remain unexplained.

 

5:30 pm                      Multiple Truth: An interview with Ven.Kalupahana Piyaratna (5 minutes)

This interview with Ven. Kalupahana Piyaratna, a Buddhist monk from the Matara district, shows the crucial role that religious leaders can play in reconciliation and bridge-building.

 

5:40 pm                      The Redemption of General Butt Naked (85 minutes)

 Dubbed “General Butt Naked” for fighting with nothing more than A K-47 and a pair of leather shoes.  Blahyi believed he possessed supernatural powers that made him impervious to bullets.

 

Saturday, January 26

3:00pm                       Defiant Art: A conversation with Chanraguptha Thenuvara (8 minutes)

This film is a portrait of an artist, who has dedicated his work to exploring the complex relationship between identity and conflict.

 

3:10 pm                      Pray the Devil Back to Hell (90 minutes)

Story of the courageous Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country.

 

5:15 pm                      The Potential for Solidarity (10 minutes)     

The film examines instances of successful North-South collaboration in Sri Lanka’s fisheries, realigns divisive perceptions that have hindered solidarity during the war, and encourages island-wide collaboration.

 

5:25 pm                                   Encounter Point (with English subtitles)  (85 munutes)   

“Encounter Point” is an 85-minute feature documentary film that follows a former Israeli settler, a Palestinian ex-prisoner, a bereaved Israeli mother and a wounded Palestinian bereaved brother who risk their lives and public standing to promote a nonviolent end to the conflict.
