Call for papers: Benevolent Goddesses of South Asia.

A Call for Scholarly Papers:  Nidan:  An International Journal for the Study of Hinduism  invites the submission of original scholarly articles that address the topic

“BENEVOLENT GODDESSES OF SOUTH ASIA.”

Articles  should be about 6,000 words. Authors are encouraged to approach the issue creatively and to treat the topic either (1) methodologically   (e.g., “Can we find strictly benevolent goddesses in South Asia??), (2)  anthropologically/ descriptively (e.g.,  a descriptive  study of a single goddess or a particular group of goddesses),  (3)  sociologically (e.g. what might benevolent goddesses reflect or how  might they function in the communities where they are found?) or  aesthetically (e.g. artistic conventions associated with good goddesses)  . These suggestions should not be understood as restrictive: any  scholarly piece that contributes to the accumulated knowledge addressing  benevolent goddesses in South Asia is welcome for consideration. This  issue of Nidan we propose to bring out in December, 2013. It will appear in the context of the December, 2012 issue of Nidan on “Fierce Goddesses in South Asia.” Nidan is a relatively new journal and has a history of publishing articles written from a variety of perspectives.

For information about the journal, please consult the website at:

Please  contact me if you have either questions or suggestions. Our policy  involves a reasonably quick turn-around, and each submission will be  reviewed by at least two external readers. Thanks for your interest in  this project.
