Streets Ahead with Haththotuwegama by Kanchuka Dharmasiri, Lohan Gunaweera and Nicole Calandra. (eds)

Gamini Haththotuwegama was one of the pioneers of the first political street theatre group in Sri Lanka, the Wayside and Open Theatre. He led the group from 1974 to 2009. He was a well-known critic who regularly wrote theatre and film reviews for the Ceylon Daily News and was a visiting lecturer at the University of Kelaniya and the University of Peradeniya, teaching in the departments of English and Fine Arts. He conducted workshops for thousands of students around the island and is known as one of the most skilled and committed trainers of actors. Haththotuwegama was a man who made connections between arts, politics, and people. He straddled many domains and sought to build bridges between disparate worlds.

This book is the first attempt to bring together a selection of Haththotuwegama’s seminal articles on theatre and cinema in a single volume. It includes articles that Haththotuwegama wrote from 1961 to speeches he delivered in 2009. The book also contains critical essays about Haththotuwegama’s work and his final interview.
