The Collective for Historical Dialogue & Memory (CHDM) works with the past to create just futures for all peoples in Sri Lanka

CHDM invites you to read a chapter from Kumari Jayawardena’s ‘The Rise of the Labour Movement in Ceylon’, focusing on the dynamics of labour movements during times of economic crisis. Here, we draw special attention to the change in communal policy that the labour movement adopted, noting the role played by A. E. Goonesinha, pioneering trade unionist and politician, often referred to as ‘the father of the labour movement.’
