New articles on religiosity among Tamil Hindu youths in Norway by Valen Kleive

Hildegunn Valen Kleive has recently published two articles (one in English and another in Norwegian) looking at religiosity among young Tamil Hindus in rural Norway.

The first (in English), ‘Belonging and Discomfort: Young Hindu Religiosity in Rural Norway’ is published in the Nordic Journal of Religion and Society and may be accessed here.

The second ‘Mestring og balanse. Trekk ved ung hindureligiøsitet’ is published in Prismet and may be accessed here. An English translation will follow at a later date.

[ English Translation: “The caste system unfortunately persists. I’m now 24-years-old and I have a female colleague who fell in love with a Tamil from another caste. The drama that followed! Insane. Families stop speaking to each other, children are forced to move out and are banished.” ]

Senthuran Varatharajah nominated for the Bachmann Preis for German Literature

Senthuran Varatharajah (PhD candidate in Philosophy, HU Berlin), who is now officially nominated for the Bachmann Preis for German Literature for his unpublished and unfinished manuscript. It’s the first time in the 38 year-old history of the Bachmann prize that an unpublished author stands nominated for one of the most renowned German language literature prizes. He’s also only the third person of colour to ever be nominated in the history of the prize (the other being of Iranian and Turkish descent). He’ll be live reading a chapter from his book between July 2nd and 4th on German, Austrian and Swiss national television.

The 38th ‘Tage der deutschsprachigen Literatur’ (Days of German Language Literature) will also be available online via live stream.

Photographer Vera Markus’ photo project “In der Heimt ihrer Kinder – Tamilen in der Schweiz” (In their children’s home – Tamils in Switzerland)

Photographer Vera Markus accompanied Tamil refugee families for two years to document their lives through her camera lense. Her photo project, “In der Heimt ihrer Kinder – Tamilen in der Schweiz” (In their children’s home – Tamils in Switzerland), illustrates the everyday lives of Tamil asylum seekers in Switzerland, who form the largest group of non-European migrants in the country (ca. 40.000 people).

‘Leger Sri Lanka executeerde hulpverleners’ by nd.nl

“Sri Lankaanse veiligheidstroepen hebben tijdens de burgeroorlog in 2006 een aantal medewerkers van een liefdadigheidsorganisatie in noorden van het land geëxecuteerd. Dat zegt de Franse organisatie Actie Tegen Honger (ACF) in een dinsdag gepubliceerd rapport. De groep baseert zich onder meer op verklaringen van getuigen en vertrouwelijke documenten.
